11 Tips to Enhance your Guest Bedroom and Dining Room

Even though the 2020 holiday season looks different for us all, there’s peace knowing that brighter days are just beyond on the horizon. Hosting family and close friends for a meal or overnight stay will be even more memorable and meaningful in the new year. To create a welcoming atmosphere for future gatherings, here are some tips to ensure your guest bedroom and dining room are inspiring, host-ready spaces.

Introduce inviting color palettes in the bedroom. We all want our guests to feel relaxed and nurtured in our homes. This warm yellow scheme envelops you upon entry. Cool serene colors can create a spa-like escape.

Include a desk or comfortable seating area if possible.  This tranquil guest room has a beautiful sofa in the window, providing a retreat for some quiet time.

Fresh flowers and small details never disappoint. I have a dear friend who always places a framed photo of a memory with their guest at bedside. A handwritten note with favorite places to explore, a meal itinerary and a Wi-Fi code are meaningful details. Perhaps a small chocolate or scented candle is a nice touch. A water carafe is also a luxury. A bedside speaker or charger for electronics is also thoughtful.

Allow a statement piece like a canopy bed or a dramatic light fixture. When a room is small, a memorable fixture can really make a statement. Not only does this small guest room in New York showcase an outstanding overhead light, but also a fun side chair and wall application for added texture.

Creating a bed niche in an office or creating a bedroom that also serves as a library, is a clever way to maximize space while adding character simultaneously.

Add a bit of whimsy.  A guest bedroom is a wonderful excuse to design an escape. Whimsical wallpaper, fun art or bold textiles transport your guest and provide a memorable experience.

If designing around multiple beds, consider unique ways to make them feel unified. I love how one designer unified two twin beds by connecting them with a wall mounted headboard. Another designer created dramatic backdrops for queen sized beds that mimic the cornice of the window treatments. This provides a very tailored and classic space.

Have fun playing with scale and proportion. An oversized lamp and miniature artwork over this bed makes an impact. Beautiful bedding and extra throws provide additional comfort. These bedside tables also provide extra drawer space and remember to have extra closet space as well. A suitcase stand feels intentional.

Make sure you’ve provided ambient lamp light, but also reading task light if necessary. I’ve always enjoyed staying in guest rooms that have nice bedside lamp with an additional sconce mounted for reading light. This particular room has a swing arm sconce at bedside making it easy to manipulate light. Remember dimmer switches are always a nice touch. A bedside wall-mounted light switch is also an appreciated detail.

Just as an artistic bed or dramatic light fixture is memorable in a guest bedroom, the same goes for the dining room.

Let the dining table make a statement. Unusual materials, like this marble surface with a tree trunk pedestal, and uniquely shaped tables make dramatic focal points. I personally love a round dining table, as I feel conversation flows more effortlessly. Juxtaposing a traditional table with contemporary chairs and vice versa always creates visual interest.

Consider designing a dining room with dual function.  The left image below shows a dining room as a library or study, while the right image shows a dining room that also functions as a game room. The clever design of the table functions for both dining and ping pong. It can even lower to become a coffee table.

Make an impact with memorable walls or ceiling. A fantastic painting, gallery wall, wallpaper or mirrored wall always creates drama. Remember a ceiling with a high gloss paint, appliqué or wallpaper takes on the importance of a fifth wall.

If space is a challenge, create a special dining experience in your kitchen. The dining table can function as a workspace to prepare food like a kitchen island.

Remember that flowers, china, crystal, silver, linens and even candles will always add layers, texture, color and beauty to every dining room table and experience.
