If you’ve ever caught yourself swooning over Insta-worthy homes where every surface appears to sparkle and closets are organized to perfection, you’re not alone. But let’s face it, life that happens off the ‘gram can get messy! Especially when kiddos and four-legged companions rule the roost.

That said, you don’t have to sacrifice great interior design for function and comfort. One of our favorite tastemakers (and mama of two boys), Allison Aars of The Festive Farmhouse, just has a knack for stylish and sensible design. And when it comes to the bathroom, a room that’s arguably considered one of the messiest in the home, she’s mastered the craft of combining livable with luxe.

If you read our previous blog post on Allison’s master bath remodel, then you know the same level of research and care went into redesigning her family’s upstairs bathroom. For our second installment of Tile with Style, we get the inside scoop on how Allison incorporated handsome, classic materials in the redesign of her boys’ upstairs bathroom. ACUSA: Tell us about your boys’ bathroom renovation at The Festive Farmhouse; what was important to you when researching tile?

AA:It was important that our tile selection captured timeless beauty that wouldn’t go out of style with the next wave of design trends. This way, the bathroom could seemingly “grow up” with the boys into their teenage years. Similarly, I knew that installing tile was something we only wanted to do once, so a strong, lasting material that could stand the test of time was a must. After all, even the best-looking tile won’t make you happy if the function isn’t there!

ACUSA: How did you land on marble-look tile for the bathroom floor and shower surround; what look were you wanting to achieve?

AA:I wanted this room to have a sweet boy-ish look that would also be able to transition into something that feels more masculine and elegant as they get older. So when we received samples of the Eon collection marble-look tiles, I was sold. To maintain a harmonious look throughout the space, we installed the handsome Corinthian Gray rectangular tile across the bathroom floor and the Carrara Honeycomb Mosaic over the shower surround. We are so in love with both. The gray in the floor tile coordinates just perfectly with the gray veining in the hexagonal tile; the two shades are very cohesive.

ACUSA: You were able to confidently mix-and-match tile sizes and shapes; do you have any tips to give readers the confidence to do the same?

AA:Choose a size relative to your space. For example, our upstairs bathroom floor is just the right size for a larger 12x24 tile format, whereas the shower surround is well-suited for a pocket-sized, geometric shape. But in all seriousness, choose whatever combination of tile sizes, shapes, colors or pattern that speak to you. I see so many people paralyzed by fear when it comes to design. Don’t get confused by what you see on Instagram pages or Pinterest boards—trust your gut and you’ll love your finished project!
